Channel-Specific DND: Stop One Opt-Out From Silencing Every Channel

A contact who texts STOP should lose SMS, not your ability to email or call them about their appointment.

Do Not Disturb in GoHighLevel is not a single on-off switch. On a contact record, the DND setting lets you choose which channels are blocked: SMS, Email, Calls, or all of them. When someone opts out of text messages, you can mark DND for SMS only and leave email and voice untouched, so a service reminder or a review request can still reach them through a channel they never restricted.

This matters because a lot of accounts treat every opt-out as a blanket contact-level block. That is safe but it also kills legitimate email marketing and appointment calls that the contact never asked to stop. Being precise about which channel triggered the opt-out keeps you compliant without losing reach you are still entitled to use.

The caveat: if a contact texts STOP, GoHighLevel handles that as an SMS-specific compliance event, so respect it as SMS-only unless the contact also asks to be removed from email or calls. Do not manually flip global DND off to work around a real opt-out, that defeats the point and creates real compliance risk.

How to use it

  1. Open the contact record and find the DND setting
  2. Click into DND options instead of the single toggle
  3. Select only the channel that opted out, such as SMS
  4. Leave Email and Calls active if the contact never restricted them
  5. Recheck the contact after any new opt-out message comes in

Who it helps

Agencies and service businesses running SMS, email, and call outreach from the same contact list.

Related: Channel-specific DND is part of the same compliance layer as A2P registration and opt-out handling.
