GoHighLevel vs Podium for service businesses: reviews, texting and what you pay

Podium is a polished review and texting inbox sold per location. GoHighLevel is a wider build-it-yourself platform. Here is how they compare and who should pick which.

Short answer: Podium is a review and texting inbox that you buy per location through a sales conversation. GoHighLevel is a wider platform with published plans that covers reviews, texting, webchat, payments, calendars and automation, but it needs to be built. If you want more Google reviews and a clean inbox with little setup, Podium fits. If you also want follow-up, booking, reminders and old-lead campaigns in one account, GoHighLevel is usually the better value.

What each tool is built to do

Podium started as a way to get local businesses reviews and let customers text them. It has grown into webchat, payments and AI replies around that core. The pitch is that it works quickly and your front desk can learn it in an afternoon.

GoHighLevel started as a CRM and automation platform for agencies. Reviews are one module among pipelines, calendars, forms, funnels, workflows, a unified inbox and a chat widget. If you want the full picture first, read what GoHighLevel is or our GoHighLevel review.

That difference decides most of the comparison. Podium arrives mostly finished and does a narrower job. GoHighLevel arrives as a toolbox and does what you build.

Reviews: what you get and what you build

This is where Podium earns its price for many shops. The review request is the product, so it works the day you start. Your team sends a link after the job and reviews come in.

In GoHighLevel you build the same thing in about an hour if you know the platform. The trigger is an appointment marked showed or an opportunity moved to a Won stage. A wait step holds for a day, an if/else step checks that the contact has texting consent, and an SMS goes out with your Google review link. The diagram above shows the path, including the branch where a complaint reply becomes a task for a person.

One caution that applies to both tools: do not send review requests only to customers you think are happy. Google's review policies discourage selectively soliciting reviews, so send to everyone who finished a job and deal with unhappy replies by phone. Texting a customer also needs their consent, and A2P registration has to be approved first (see A2P 10DLC approval explained). This is practical guidance and not legal advice.

Texting, missed calls and the inbox

Both tools give you a shared inbox where office staff can read and answer customer texts. Podium's inbox is polished and tuned for this. GoHighLevel's conversations screen also carries email, calls and web chat, and every message attaches to a contact with tags, a pipeline stage and a calendar history.

That attachment matters for follow-up. In GoHighLevel a missed call can trigger a text back, create an opportunity and start a quote follow-up sequence without anyone touching it. We cover the setup and the mistakes in missed call text back in GoHighLevel. If your problem is that nobody follows up on a quote, the same account can handle that too.

If you go with GoHighLevel, test the workflows on your own phone before a real customer sees them. A workflow that shows as successful can still send the wrong message, which we explain in why a workflow can say it worked and still send the wrong message.

What you pay: per location vs plan plus usage

Podium's pricing is sold per location and set in a sales conversation, so two similar shops can get different quotes. We will not guess at a number. Get the quote in writing, with texting volume, number of users and contract length spelled out, and ask what changes when you add a second location.

GoHighLevel publishes its three monthly plans">its three monthly plans, currently $97, $297 and $497 a month, so check the page for today's numbers. The $97 plan is built for one business. The $297 plan allows unlimited sub-accounts, which is how a multi-location owner or an agency gives each location its own account. Texts, calls, email and AI features are billed by usage on top, so watch the wallet and read how to save money on SMS in GoHighLevel. Anyone who signs up through our links gets 5% off every Yotomations project, detailed on the GoHighLevel signup bonus page.

The line item people forget is the build. Podium's setup cost is mostly the vendor's time. GoHighLevel's is either your hours or a partner's fixed fee, and that is the number to put next to the Podium quote. Our breakdown of what one client costs to run on GoHighLevel shows where usage tends to land.

Which one fits your business

  • One location, reviews are the only goal, no one to build anything: Podium is a reasonable choice. You are paying for speed to start.
  • Home services with leads from Google, Yelp and referrals: GoHighLevel. You need missed call text back, quote follow-up, booking and reminders, not only reviews. See our home services page for how that is set up.
  • Multi-location group: Compare a per-location Podium quote against one GoHighLevel plan with a sub-account per location. The gap tends to widen as locations grow, but the build cost grows too.
  • Agency serving local clients: GoHighLevel, because you can resell it under your own brand and Podium is not designed for that.
  • You already have a system of record like Jobber or an EMR: Either tool needs an integration. GoHighLevel has webhooks and an API to build it, which is harder to do with a closed inbox product.

If you are leaning toward GoHighLevel and want to test before you commit, the GoHighLevel free trial is the place to build a review workflow and see how it feels.

What we would do first

We would ask what you want the tool to do in the next 90 days. If the list is reviews and a shared inbox, we would tell you to get a Podium quote in writing and compare. If the list includes follow-up, booking, reminders or reactivating old leads, we would build it on GoHighLevel and set up the review request as the first workflow, since it is quick and visible.

If you are moving off Podium, we plan the phone number port, the review request flow and the inbox handover before the cutover so texts do not drop. Our new to GoHighLevel migration is fixed scope and starts at $997.

Frequently asked

Is GoHighLevel cheaper than Podium?

It usually is once you want more than reviews and texting, because GoHighLevel publishes its plan prices and includes pipelines, calendars, payments and workflows in the same account. Podium prices through a sales quote per location, so compare your actual quote against the GoHighLevel plan plus usage and setup. Count the build cost on the GoHighLevel side, since someone has to configure it.

Does GoHighLevel have review management like Podium?

Yes. You can connect your Google Business Profile, send review requests by text or email from a workflow, see reviews in one place and reply from inside GoHighLevel. What you do not get out of the box is a finished review program, so the timing, wording and follow-up are yours to build.

Can I switch from Podium to GoHighLevel without losing my reviews?

Your Google reviews live on your Google Business Profile, so they stay put. Ask Podium what conversation history it can export before you cancel, and plan the phone number port ahead of time so texts keep flowing during the switch.

What is a good Podium alternative for a small service business?

If you want reviews and texting only, look at other review tools with public pricing. If you also want missed call text back, quote follow-up, booking and reminders, GoHighLevel covers all of it in one account. Pick based on the jobs you need done, not the feature count.

Do I need A2P 10DLC registration with either tool?

Yes. Any platform that sends business texts to US customers over standard local numbers needs the brand and campaign registered with the carriers. Ask who handles the registration and what happens when it is rejected. This is practical guidance, not legal advice.
