Should You Run GoHighLevel With SMS on Your Own Twilio Account?
Contacts and workflows in GoHighLevel, texting through a separate Twilio account: normal setup or a headache? When it fits, what breaks, and how to test it.
Short answer: Yes, you can run GoHighLevel as your CRM and send texts through your own Twilio account, and plenty of businesses do. It makes sense when you already have approved Twilio numbers and a registered A2P campaign, or when you must keep control of the numbers. It creates headaches when nobody owns the second system, because opt-outs, delivery logs and billing now live in two places.
The clearest case is that the Twilio account existed first. A company already has numbers, an approved brand and campaign, and months of sending history. Re-registering all of that inside GoHighLevel means waiting on approval again, and in the meantime texts can be filtered. Keeping Twilio and pointing the sub-account at it avoids that gap.
The second case is a number you cannot lose. If a business has used one number for years and customers know it, the number's home matters. We cover the options in our post on keeping an existing phone number in GoHighLevel. Leaving it on Twilio is sometimes the least risky answer.
The third case is control. Some teams want their developers to own the carrier layer, use Twilio features GoHighLevel does not expose, or run one Twilio account across several systems, not just the CRM. If another system also sends from those numbers, a shared Twilio account is the sensible home for them.
What changes when texting leaves the GoHighLevel wallet
Settings differ by account and HighLevel changes its menus, so confirm in your own sub-account. As a general pattern, this is what moves:
Item
HighLevel's built-in phone system
Your own Twilio account
Who bills the texts
Your GoHighLevel wallet, with rebilling available for agencies
Twilio, directly to the account owner
Where A2P 10DLC is registered
In GoHighLevel
In your Twilio console
Where you read delivery errors
Conversation and message logs in GoHighLevel
Twilio's message logs, plus what GoHighLevel shows
Who fixes a rejected campaign
You, with HighLevel support
You, with Twilio support
Number ownership

Inside your Twilio account
The billing row is the one agencies trip over. If you resell texting to clients and want it to show up as a line on their usage, the built-in system is easier. Our post on saving money on SMS in GoHighLevel walks through where the real costs sit before you decide a Twilio rate is the answer.
A2P does not go away. Carriers still expect a registered brand and campaign for 10-digit local numbers, whichever platform sits in front. If you are registering fresh, read our A2P 10DLC approval explainer first. That is practical guidance, not legal advice; the carriers and The Campaign Registry set the rules, and the FCC sets the consent rules under the TCPA.
Where a split setup breaks
STOP replies. A customer texts STOP. Twilio may block further sends from that number to that customer at the carrier layer, but your workflows live in GoHighLevel. If the contact is not marked do-not-disturb there, the next workflow step still tries to send and fails, or a different number you own sends to them. You want both systems to agree.
Debugging in the wrong log. A text shows as sent in GoHighLevel and never arrives. The answer is usually a carrier error code in the Twilio log, not in the CRM. If you see 30003 or similar, our post on GoHighLevel SMS error 30003 explains what the code means.
Wrong sending number. With several numbers in a Twilio account, a workflow or a user can pick one the contact has never seen. Customers reply to a number that is not tied to the thread. See why GoHighLevel sends from the wrong number for the usual causes.
Nobody owns the second system. The agency built it, the owner holds the Twilio login, and a payment card expires. Texting stops, and the symptom looks like a GoHighLevel bug. This one is organizational, and we see it more than any technical fault.
A one-afternoon test before you go live
Create a test contact using your own mobile number and send one manual text from the GoHighLevel conversation. Confirm it arrives from the number you expect.
Reply to it. Confirm the reply lands in the same conversation thread, not a new one.
Trigger one real workflow that sends an SMS, using a tag or form submission on the test contact. Check that the message appears in both the GoHighLevel log and the Twilio log.
Reply STOP. Check the contact for do-not-disturb on the SMS channel in GoHighLevel, then try to send again and see what happens in each system.
Write down who holds the Twilio login, who gets billing emails, and who is called when a campaign is flagged.
If step four does not behave the way you expect, fix it before a campaign goes out. Texting a person who opted out is the one mistake in this setup that costs more than a few failed messages.
What we would do first
We would ask one question: why is Twilio separate? If the answer is an approved campaign and a number you cannot lose, we keep it and run the five-step test above. If the answer is that someone set it up years ago and nobody remembers why, we price out moving to the built-in system, because one place to look is worth something. If texting also has to talk to a job system or a billing tool, that is a custom integration job, scoped at a fixed price with no hourly billing.

Frequently asked
Can I use my own Twilio account with GoHighLevel?
Yes. A sub-account can be pointed at a Twilio account you own by entering its credentials in the phone settings, instead of using HighLevel's built-in phone system. Check the current options under Settings in your sub-account, since HighLevel moves menus around. Once connected, Twilio bills you directly for those messages.
Is it cheaper to use my own Twilio account in GoHighLevel?
Not automatically. You pay Twilio's rates directly and give up the GoHighLevel wallet and any rebilling you set up for clients. For an agency that resells texting, the loss of simple rebilling often costs more than the rate difference saves.
Where do I register A2P 10DLC if I use Twilio?
Brand and campaign registration then lives in your Twilio console, not in the GoHighLevel trust center. The business information must match what you use on your forms and website. This is practical guidance, not legal advice.
Will my workflows still work with a Twilio number?
Workflow actions that send an SMS still run in GoHighLevel and the conversation shows in the inbox. What changes is the carrier path underneath and where the delivery log lives. Test one workflow end to end before you move a live pipeline.
