Short answer: No. As of October 14, 2026, GoHighLevel has no trigger that fires when someone follows your Instagram account and no action that sends that person a first DM. The limit comes from Meta, which lets a business reply on Instagram only after the person messages or comments. The setup that works today is to get the follower to start the conversation, then let a workflow reply, capture a phone number and move them into a pipeline.
What GoHighLevel can and cannot do with Instagram today
You connect an Instagram professional account to GoHighLevel through the Facebook and Instagram integration, and from then on Instagram messages land in the Conversations inbox next to texts and email. That means a workflow can react to a reply on the Instagram channel, send a reply back on that channel, tag the contact, create an opportunity and notify a team member. All of that works once a person has contacted you.
What it cannot do is watch your follower list. A follow is not a message, so nothing arrives in the inbox and no workflow has anything to start from. The people asking for this feature want a welcome DM to go out the moment someone follows. That is the part that does not exist.
One poster in r/gohighlevel this week described the same wall: the Instagram connection only works for conversations the other person starts, and they attributed that to Meta's rule rather than to GoHighLevel. That matches what we see on builds.
Why Meta's rule is the real limit
Instagram's business messaging is built so that a person controls who can message them. A business can respond after the person sends a message, and inside a short window (Meta uses 24 hours as the standard one) it can keep the conversation going. Replying privately to a comment on your post is also allowed. Opening a thread with a stranger who merely followed you is not.
This matters because any workaround that promises to DM every new follower is working around that rule or not doing what it says. We have not verified a tool that does it cleanly, and an Instagram account that gets restricted is a bigger problem than a slow welcome message. The safer plan is to make starting the chat easy and attractive.
The workflow to build now
This is the pattern we build in GoHighLevel automation projects for service businesses that get inquiries from Instagram. Trigger names vary a little between accounts, so check the trigger list in yours.
Trigger. Start on a reply on the Instagram channel (a direct message or story reply), or on a comment trigger if your account offers one for Instagram posts and you want a keyword like QUOTE to start it.
Tag check. Add an if/else at the top: if the contact already has the tag ig-welcomed, end. If not, add the tag and continue. This is the same guard that prevents the problem described in our post on duplicate text messages.
First reply. Send one message on the Instagram channel that answers what they asked and ends with a single question, such as the best number to text them a quote.
Wait for the reply. Use a wait step set to the contact replying, with a timeout inside Meta's 24-hour window. If nothing comes back, send one short nudge before the window closes, then stop.
Capture. When they send a number, write it to the contact's phone field, add a tag such as ig-phone-captured, and create an opportunity in your pipeline.
Hand off. Notify the person who answers leads, and move follow-up to SMS or email. If speed matters to you, the timing logic in our speed to lead build applies here as well.
One more check before you turn it on: contacts created from Instagram often have a name and no phone or email. When the same person later fills out a form, you can end up with two records, so decide in advance which one wins and test it with your own account.
Entry points that get followers to start the chat
Since the follower has to move first, the job is to give them a reason. A sentence in your bio is not enough on its own. Put the prompt where they are already looking.
Entry point
Who starts it
What it gives you
Best for
Keyword comment on a post or reel
The follower
A DM reply tied to that comment
A free guide, a seasonal offer, a price sheet
Story reply
The follower
An open DM thread
Stories that ask a question or show a before and after
Direct DM to your account
The follower
An inbound conversation in GoHighLevel
A bio line like "DM us QUOTE for a price"
Bio link to a form
The follower
A phone number and consent on a form, no Meta window
People who would rather not chat on Instagram
The bio link row deserves attention. A form that captures a phone number and a consent checkbox gets you out of Instagram's rules entirely, because you now own a channel you are allowed to use. Texting people who gave their number is also governed by consent rules (the TCPA, enforced by the FCC, plus carrier registration), and sending your first text should match what the form promised. This is practical guidance and not legal advice. If your texts are not going out, check your A2P 10DLC registration first.
Where the 1,142-vote request stands
The request "Automatic Messages to New Instagram Followers" on HighLevel's ideas board has 1,142 votes and 237 comments as of today, and its status is planned. It was opened on May 8, 2024. A newer, smaller request, "send dms to new instagram followers" (17 votes, open, created October 6, 2026), asks for the same thing. Planned is HighLevel's label for the request, not a promise of what it will do or when, so we would not build a plan around a release.
If something does ship, it will still run inside Meta's rules, so expect it to depend on the person having contacted you in some way. When that happens, here is what we would keep and retire:
Keep: the tag check, the phone capture step, the pipeline stage, the SMS handoff and the consent record. None of that depends on how the first message starts.
Retire: any manual routine where someone checks new followers and pastes a message, and any prompt in your posts that only exists to force the person to message first, if the new feature makes it unnecessary.
Re-test: the duplicate guard. A native trigger can overlap with your keyword trigger and welcome the same person twice.
What we would do first
We would look at where your Instagram leads actually come from this month, pick the one entry point that already works (usually story replies or a bio line that says to DM a keyword), and build the six-step workflow above around that one path. Then we would add the form fallback for people who do not want to chat on Instagram. If you want that built and tested against your real account, our GoHighLevel automation service is fixed scope with milestone pricing, and the first 30-minute call is free.

Frequently asked
Can GoHighLevel auto DM new Instagram followers?
Not today. There is no trigger that fires when someone follows your account, and Meta does not let a business open a conversation with a person who has not messaged or commented. You can automate the reply once the person starts the chat.
Can I message someone on Instagram first from GoHighLevel?
Not as a cold first message. GoHighLevel's Instagram connection works inside the rules Meta sets for business messaging, which start with the person contacting you. If you need to reach someone who has not messaged you, you need another channel where you already have their consent.
Is there a third-party tool that DMs every new follower safely?
We have not verified one that does it within Meta's rules, so we do not recommend any. A tool that sends first messages to people who never contacted you either works differently than it claims or puts your Instagram account at risk of restrictions.
How do I turn Instagram DMs into phone numbers in GoHighLevel?
Have the first automated reply answer the question the person asked, then ask for one thing: the best number to text. A workflow with a wait step for the reply, an if/else on whether the phone field is filled, and a tag once it is captured does the rest.
Do I need A2P 10DLC if I move Instagram leads to text?
Yes, if you send business texts to US numbers through GoHighLevel, your brand and campaign need to be registered. Instagram DMs themselves do not use 10DLC, but the follow-up texts do.
