GoHighLevel AI Studio Two-Step Checkout: Turn Abandoned Checkouts Into Leads

AI Studio Payments now supports a two-step checkout that captures the buyer before payment, configurable fields and richer order confirmations. Set it up with a prompt, then point your follow-up at the right trigger.

Short answer: If you sell through an app or page built in GoHighLevel's AI Studio, you can now prompt it to "make it a two-step checkout." Step one saves the buyer's name and email as a CRM contact, step two takes payment, so someone who stops before paying is still a lead you can follow up with. The catch: those leads fire the Contact Created trigger, not Order Form Submission, so your recovery workflow has to listen for the right one.

What changed in AI Studio checkouts

HighLevel shipped three checkout upgrades for AI Studio Payments:

  • Checkout fields: show, hide or require the phone number and each billing address field. Name and email are always required.
  • Two-step checkout: modeled on the Two Step Order form in Funnels. The buyer becomes a contact in step one, before any card details.
  • Order details: the confirmation shows the order ID, items, taxes, total paid and, for subscriptions, the next charge. You can also send buyers to your own thank-you page that displays their real order.

Projects already using Payments get these on their next prompt; nothing needs reconnecting. This applies to AI Studio projects. Funnel order forms already had their own two-step option.

How to switch it on

AI Studio is configured by prompting, so the setup is a sentence each. HighLevel's examples:

  • "Make it a two-step checkout"
  • "Make phone required and hide the billing address"
  • "Send buyers to my own thank-you page after payment"

Make the phone field required if you plan to follow up by text, and only if you also collect consent the right way. Our guide to the SMS opt-in checkbox covers what the form needs. Then run a test purchase and a test abandonment with your own email before sending traffic.

Build the recovery follow-up on the right trigger

Because step one creates a contact, the useful sequence is simple: contact created from the checkout, wait a short time, check whether they paid, and follow up only if they did not.

  1. Trigger on Contact Created, filtered so it only fires for contacts coming from this checkout (a tag or source set by the app works well).
  2. Wait 30 to 60 minutes.
  3. If no payment or order exists for the contact, send a short reminder with a link back to the checkout. If they paid, end the workflow.
  4. Optionally send one more reminder the next day, then stop. Two touches is plenty for a one-time purchase.

If you already had a workflow listening for Order Form Submission, it will not see these early leads, which is the most likely way to miss this feature's value.

Is it worth doing before Black Friday?

If you run promotions through an AI Studio app, yes. A checkout that captures the email first turns every abandoned cart into someone you can remind, and late November is when that matters most. HighLevel also updated its Meta Pixel events this month so InitiateCheckout fires when checkout is reached, which helps retargeting from the same traffic.

Want it built and tested for you? Our Speed to Lead Sprint covers fast follow-up automations, and the account audit checks your existing payment workflows. For everything else HighLevel released this month, see the LevelUp 2026 announcements page.

Frequently asked

What is a two-step checkout in GoHighLevel AI Studio?

A checkout where step one saves the buyer as a CRM contact and step two collects payment, so buyers who do not finish paying remain leads.

Which workflow trigger fires for two-step checkout leads?

Contact Created. HighLevel notes these leads do not fire Order Form Submission, so check that your workflows listen for the right trigger.

How do I turn on two-step checkout in AI Studio?

Prompt AI Studio with "Make it a two-step checkout." Projects already using Payments get the change on their next prompt with no reconnection.

Can I hide the billing address at checkout?

Yes. You can show, hide or require the phone number and each billing address field. Name and email are always required.
