Does Missed Call Text Back Need Consent in GoHighLevel?
People are asking whether an automatic text to a missed caller needs consent. Here is how to build the reply in GoHighLevel so it holds up, and where consent really gets collected.
Short answer: Yes, a missed call text back is still a text message, so consent matters. One informational reply to someone who just called you is the most defensible version. A sales sequence is not, and that needs written consent first. Build the workflow with a DND check, one message per caller, a STOP line and a time window. This is practical guidance and not legal advice.
Why a missed call text back raises a consent question
A thread on r/gohighlevel on October 15 put it bluntly: automatic missed call text back apparently needs some form of consent, which seems to defeat the point of an automatic text. The poster said nobody talks about it. They are right that the usual setup guides skip it.
The rule behind the question is the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), which the Federal Communications Commission enforces through its rules and which private plaintiffs use in lawsuits. The FCC treats text messages as calls. Informational messages and marketing messages sit under different consent standards, and marketing sent with automated tools generally calls for prior express written consent.
The argument for a missed call reply is that the person called you, gave you their number by doing so, and is getting one message tied to that exact request. That argument is reasonable, but it is an argument and not a guarantee. The more the text looks like a pitch, the weaker it gets.
What the first text should and should not contain
Most of the risk sits in the wording and in what happens after the text. Write the message as if the only job is answering the call you missed.

Your business name in the first line

A text such as "Hi, this is Ridgeline Roofing. Sorry we missed your call. What can we help with? Reply STOP to opt out" works fine. It is short, it names you and it asks one thing.
How to build it in GoHighLevel so it holds up
The setup we use is a workflow with a missed call trigger and a few conditions ahead of the send. For the basic build and copy, see our guide to missed call text back in GoHighLevel. The consent-aware version adds the steps below.
Check DND first. Add an If/Else step at the top that exits if the contact is marked do not disturb for SMS. Someone who replied STOP last month should not get a new text because they called again.
Turn off re-entry. In the workflow settings, do not allow the same contact to enter again right away, or use a wait and a tag so they get one reply per day. Repeat callers who get a text on every missed ring look like spam.
Add a time window. A missed call at 10 p.m. should not get an instant chatty reply. Use a time condition and send a different text after hours that says when you open. Federal telemarketing rules limit solicitation calls to between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. in the recipient's time zone, and a text that has drifted into promotion falls into that bucket.
Keep the opt-out line in the template. GoHighLevel handles STOP replies by setting SMS DND on the contact, but the text should still tell people how to leave.
Stop the workflow at the reply. When the caller answers, remove them from any automated sequence and let your team take the conversation. A person typing a reply to a person is a different thing from a nurture flow.
Landlines and some VoIP numbers will not receive the text. That is not a consent problem, but it explains why a missed caller sometimes says they never got anything.
Where consent is really collected
The honest answer to the Reddit question is that you rarely collect consent at the moment of the missed call. You collect it earlier, in the places people already interact with you, and the missed call reply rides on top.
Your phone greeting and voicemail. Add a line such as "If we miss you, we will text you back from this number. Reply STOP anytime." It takes ten seconds to record.
Website and ad forms. Use an unchecked consent box that names your business and says what kinds of messages to expect. Store the answer in a custom field or tag so a workflow can read it.

The tag matters because it creates a line in your own data. A contact with a "sms-consent-marketing" tag and a form submission behind it can go into a nurture sequence. A contact with no tag got the one reply and nothing else.
Mistakes that turn a good idea into a complaint
The most common problem we see is the missed call workflow quietly enrolling people into a ten-step follow-up. The first text is defensible. Steps two through ten are marketing, sent to someone who never agreed to marketing.
The second is sending from a number that does not match the one they called. Someone rings your main line and gets a text from a different number, which looks like phishing. That belongs with the wrong-number cases we cover in why GoHighLevel sends texts from the wrong number.
The third is pointing the missed call trigger at every inbound call, including vendors, existing customers on a job and people who were just transferred. Filter by tag or pipeline stage so a customer mid-project does not get a "sorry we missed you" text while your crew is in their kitchen.
Rules vary by state. Some states have their own telephone solicitation laws that go beyond the federal baseline, Florida among them. If you text across state lines or into regulated fields such as healthcare, have counsel review the wording once. That review is cheap next to a demand letter.
What we would do first
We would open the existing missed call workflow and read it end to end, looking for the DND check, the re-entry setting, the time window and any sequence hanging off the first text. Then we would fix the wording, add the greeting line and tag the contacts who have real consent on file. That work is part of our Speed to Lead Sprint, starting at $1,950, which builds the missed call reply, the first-response flow and the checks around it as one fixed-scope project.

Frequently asked
Is a missed call text back legal?
A single reply that answers the caller's call, names your business and offers a way to opt out is the most defensible form of it. Rules differ by state and by how the message is worded, so have a lawyer review your setup. This is practical guidance and not legal advice.
Do I need written consent to text someone who called me?
Informational replies and marketing messages are treated differently. Marketing texts sent with automated tools generally call for prior express written consent, while a one-time reply to the person's own request is usually argued under a lower standard. If the text pitches an offer, treat it as marketing.
What happens when someone replies STOP to a missed call text back?
GoHighLevel handles STOP replies by marking the contact as do not disturb for SMS, so later texts from workflows should not go out. Add a DND check at the start of your workflow anyway so a repeat caller never gets a second message after opting out.
Does A2P 10DLC registration cover missed call text back?
Registration is where you describe your use case and how people opt in, and reviewers read it. Describe the missed call reply the way it actually works. A registration that says one thing while your workflows do another is a common reason for filtering and rejections.
